萤火虫, 萤火虫, 慢慢飞
夏夜里, 夏夜里, 风轻吹
怕黑的孩子安心睡吧
让萤火虫给你一点光

燃烧小小的身影在夜晚
为夜路的旅人照亮方向
短暂的生命努力地发光
让黑暗的世界充满希望

萤火虫, 萤火虫, 慢慢飞
我的心, 我的心, 还在吹
城市的灯光明艳闪耀
还有谁会记得你燃烧光亮

Firefly, firefly, fly slowly

Summer night, summer night, wind blowing slowly

A child who fears dark, please sleep tight

Let fireflies give you a light

Little glowing bodies in the night

Guide travellers at night to the right direction

In their short life, they glow all they might

Allowing the dark filled with hope

Firefly, firefly, fly slowly

My heart, my heart, still chasing

As the city lights brightly shine and glisten

Who will remember your glowing light?

I heard this song from youtube around 2 weeks ago. I was wasting my time watching all videos about China’s Got Talent. The first video I watched was the short-stature 23-years old girl, Zhu Jie, sings this song in her audition. It was fortunate that I was watching the video with English subtitle because I’m just too ‘chinese’ to be able to understand Chinese. I was very much like this song once I heard it. I also love the lyric. For a second it didn’t give me a meaningful meaning. The next second it blasted my mind.

This song is telling us about a hope. Even in the hardest situation that everything seems like a cul-de-sac, there is always a hope. Fireflies aren’t useful little bugs but they never stop to shine no matter how bright the light we have. We never missed fireflies because we have lights. We just don’t care because we’re happy. But, when we’re drowned into darkness, when there is no a single thing we can use to shine in the dark, we just need these unuseful little bugs. They might not give us the amount of brightness we need but it certainly gives us a hope. A hope is everything you need to survive. Without hope there is nothing we can do. That’s why we must never stop to have a hope and keep shining.

Let me give write 2 quotes I got after reading the lyric 2 weeks ago:

No matter how small you are, no matter how big the problem is, all you need is hope and love

Don’t ask the world to shine for you, but let yourself shine and fly to the highest sky

I hope this can raise your hope and believe me, living without a hope is a bad thing. A handicap handless man became a pianist and he won China’s Got Talent 2010 with just a hope in the beginning. That man, Liu Wei, have taught me a lesson. I promise to stop (or at least reduce) grumbling about my life.

I hope you’d hope.

P.S: I did not do the translation. I don’t know if it is the correct translation. I read the translation from youtube video and I took a guess what the meaning is and re-wrote it to suit my mind. I hope it, at least, will touch the core meaning.
